Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

दृष्ट्वैव तामृश्यशृङ्गः प्रहृष्टः संभ्रान्तरूपोऽभ्यपतत्तदानीम् ।
प्रोवाच चैनां भवतोऽऽश्रमाय गच्छाव यावन्न पिता ममैति ॥ ७ ॥
