Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

न हि मे जीवितेनार्थो न राज्येन धनेन वा ।
तादृशान्सुहृदो हत्वा मूढस्यास्य सुहृद्द्रुहः ॥ ४ ॥

na hi me jīvitenārtho na rājyena dhanena vā |
tādṛśānsuhṛdo hatvā mūḍhasyāsya suhṛddruhaḥ || 4 ||
