The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 1.1.35, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 1.1.35 contained in Chapter 1—Bhauma (the earthly plane)—of Part one (prathama-khanda).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 1.1.35:

भोजयित्वा ततो दीनान् अन्त्यजान् अपि सादरम् ।
अतोषयद् यथा-न्यायं श्व-शृगाल-खग-कृइमीन् ॥ ३५ ॥

bhojayitvā tato dīnān antyajān api sādaram |
atoṣayad yathā-nyāyaṃ śva-śṛgāla-khaga-kṛimīn || 35 ||

Thereafter, the brāhmaṇa pleased all the destitute, wretched and famished folk with sufficient foodstuffs. Then he fully satisfied the dogs, jackals, birds and all other surrounding living entities with suitable meals.

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

(By Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)

The word dīnān means not only lower caste persons such as śudras who are devoid of devotional service, but anyone afflicted with hunger in the surrounding area.
