Upe (उपे).—2 P. [उप-इ (upa-i)]

1) To approach, come near, arrive at, reach (a place, person &c.); परमं साम्यमुपैति (paramaṃ sāmyamupaiti) Muṇḍ. Up.3.1.3. लतामुपेत्य (latāmupetya) Ś.1; so राजानम्, दुर्गम् (rājānam, durgam) &c. योगी परं स्थानमुपैति चाद्यम् (yogī paraṃ sthānamupaiti cādyam) Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 8.28,1.15,9.28.

2) To go to (a master), become a pupil. उपेत्य पप्रच्छ (upetya papraccha) Praśna. Up.1.2; 6.1.

3) To have intercourse with (a woman), cohabit; वाच्यश्चानुपयन् पतिः (vācyaścānupayan patiḥ) Manusmṛti 9.4.

4) To under go, perform, undertake, practise; तपः, सत्रम् (tapaḥ, satram) &c.

5) To go to or pass into any state; योगम् (yogam) R.16.84; भेदम् (bhedam) Kumārasambhava 2.4; to fall into (misfortune &c.); क्षयम्, मत्युम्, सुखम्, दुःखम्, निद्राम् (kṣayam, matyum, sukham, duḥkham, nidrām) &c.

6) To obtain, attain to; तस्य प्रिया ज्ञातयः सुकृतमुपयन्ति (tasya priyā jñātayaḥ sukṛtamupayanti) Kauṣ. Up.1.1; उपैति शस्यं परिणामरम्यताम् (upaiti śasyaṃ pariṇāmaramyatām) Kirātārjunīya 4.22.

7) To incur, be present at.

8) To fall to one's lot or share, befall; उद्योगिनं पुरुषसिंहमुपैति लक्ष्मीः (udyoginaṃ puruṣasiṃhamupaiti lakṣmīḥ) Pañcatantra (Bombay) 1.361; Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 6.27.

9) To consider as, admit, acknowledge.
