Tathāgata (तथागत):—(tathā + gata)

1) adj. sich in solcher Lage —, in solchem Zustande befindend; derartig, so beschaffen: nalaṃ dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam [Mahābhārata 3, 3014.] ājagmuḥ sahitāstatra yatra rājā tathāgataḥ [1, 4879. 12, 5549.] imāṃ tathāgatabhrātṛkām [Mālavikāgnimitra 67, 18] (vgl. aṃhāsu tahagadesuvi [63, ult.]). śriyaṃ tathāgatāṃ dṛṣṭvā jvalantīmiva pāṇḍave [Mahābhārata 2, 1690.] [Prātiśākhya zum Ṛgveda 3, 5.] —

2) m. a) ein Buddha [Amarakoṣa 1, 1, 1, 8.] [Hemacandra’s Abhidhānacintāmaṇi 232.] [Rgva tch’er rol pa 5] u. s. w. Der Name wird auf verschiedene Weise gedeutet und sowohl in tathā + gata, als auch in tathā + āgata zerlegt; vgl. [Burnouf 75,] [Nalopākhyāna 5. 626.] Nach unserer Meinung eignet sich die u. 1. angegebene Bed. besser als alle übrigen zur Bez. eines Buddha: die Prädicate desselben sind so mannichfaltig und zugleich so schwer durch einen geeigneten Ausdruck zu bezeichnen, dass man es vorzog ihn schlechtweg als einen solchen, wie er in Wirklichkeit ist, zu bezeichnen. — b) Nomen proprium eines Fürsten Hist. de la vie de [Hiouen-Thsang I, 150.] — Vgl. durgata, sugata .
