ṣōḍaśamahādānēṃ (षोडशमहादानें).—n pl The sixteen great gifts; viz. tulāpuruṣa A human image made of some metal (according to the munificence and capability of the donor); hiraṇyagarbha A golden image of brahmadēva; brahmāṇḍa A golden representation of Brahma's egg, representing the universe; kalpavṛkṣa An image of the tree so named; gōsahastra Gift of a thousand cows; hiraṇyakāmadhēnu A golden image of the cow named kāmadhēnu; hiraṇyāśva A golden horse; hiraṇyā- śvaratha A golden horse and chariot; pañcalaṅgalaka Gift of five ploughs; dharā Gift of land (or of money to purchase land); viśvacakra A golden coil () representing the sphere or system of the universe;--of which there are sixteen; kalpalatā A golden creeper with its stem, leaves, and tendrils, representing the creeper of this name; saptasāgara Gift of the seven seas, i. e. of a quantity of each of the seven substances respectively composing them, viz. milk, curds, ghee, honey &c.; ratnadhēnu A cow made of a gem; mahābhūtaghaṭa A golden pot or vessel given in the name of Mahadeva or of Viṣṇu.
