Ṛgveda a) die Gesammtheit derjenigen heiligen Poesien, welche nach ihrer Anwendung im Cultus ṛcaḥ heissen im Unterschied von den yajūṃṣi und sāmāni; b) die geordnete und aufgezeichnete Sammlung dieser Lieder, eine der heiligen Schriften. Der [Ṛgveda] ist in zehn Bücher (maṇḍala) eingetheilt: die ersten acht enthalten jedesmal besondere Liederkreise, welche einem Verfasser oder einem bestimmten Geschlecht zugeschrieben sind; das neunte Buch enthält die Soma - Lieder; das zehnte ist ein Anhang von Poesien verschiedener Art und von mancherlei Verfassern; c) in weiterem Sinne bezeichnet das Wort eine ganze Abtheilung der heiligen Bücher, unter welcher liturgische und andere Bücher begriffen sind.
