The name is derived from the words mūtra, translating to “urine”, and virajanīya, referring to “to modify or improve the color”. It is a technical term used throughout Āyurveda. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Padma (Nelumbium speciosum), Utpala (Nymphaea stellata, blue), Nalina (Nymphaea, white), Kumuda (Nymphaea, red), Saugandhika (Nymphaea, lotus), Puṇḍarīka (Nelumbium sp.) and Śatapatra (Nelumbium sp.). The collection of herbs named Mūtravirajanīya is one of the fifty Mahākaṣāya.
