Diese Wurzel glauben wir für zwei Veda - Stellen aufstellen zu müssen; auch meinen wir, dass das desid. dīdāṃsate, welches [Pāṇini’s acht Bücher 3, 1, 6] auf dān zurückgeführt wird, sich eben so aus dan habe entwickeln können wie mīmāṃsate aus man, wofür a. a. O. gleichfalls mān angenommen wird. Dem desid. wird von der [Siddhāntakaumudī] und [Vopadeva’s Grammatik.8,103] die Bedeutung ārjava gerade sein und gerade machen zugetheilt. Die intrans. Bedeutung giebt in der folgenden Stelle auch beim simpl. einen genügenden Sinn: ū.dhvā yacchreṇi.na śiśu.danma.ṣū sthi.aṃ śevṛ.haṃ sūta mā.ā wenn das Kind (oder falls śiśu hier so v. a. śiśna wäre: das Glied) wie eine senkrechte Linie d. i. gerade in die Höhe sich aufrichtet [Ṛgveda 10, 61, 20.] In der zweiten Stelle wäre die trans. Bed. corrigere, zurechtbringen, zurechtweisen anzunehmen: dano.viśa indra mṛ.hravācaḥ [Ṛgveda 1, 174, 2.] Nach [Sāyaṇa] = adamayaḥ oder anadaḥ, nach [Yāska’s Nirukta 6, 31] als nomen = dānamanasaḥ .
