by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 90.20

रत्नामयीये भूमीये बोधिमण्डं परिस्फुटो ।
या नाभि बुद्धक्षेत्रस्य देवपुत्रेहि निर्मिता ॥ २० ॥

ratnāmayīye bhūmīye bodhimaṇḍaṃ parisphuṭo |
yā nābhi buddhakṣetrasya devaputrehi nirmitā || 20 ||

But the bodhi throne was surrounded by bejewelled ground which the devas fashioned in the centre of the Buddha-field. (20)
